Jazkarta wins CMSA Spotlight award for best education website

May 10, 2010

I attended the CMSExpo 2010 conference in Chicago last week, and on the final day of the conference there was an awards ceremony to recognize outstanding work in the professional CMS community.

I’m happy to report that Jazkarta won an award for the Best Plone-Powered Education Website: Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Much of the credit goes to Mike Trachtman, the project manager who stayed cool and focused during challenging times. His commitment to the project and servicing the customer was exceptional. Thanks Mike!

Also, I must commend the Harvard SEAS team for all their hard work in migrating the content to the website and intranet, and for being champions of Plone within the school. Thanks to everyone at Harvard SEAS for giving us this opportunity to work with you.

Within the Harvard community, the SEAS website has gotten some kudos as well. It was voted the Best Harvard Website by the Harvard Voice, Harvard’s student-life magazine.

Harvard was gracious to host the last two World Plone Day events. Below are the slides from one of the presentations by Eliza Grinnell and Lesley Lam, reflecting on one year with Plone at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

World Plone Day in Boston

April 28, 2010

Today is World Plone Day and together with the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, we are organizing a half-day event with 3 talks, a round of lightning talks, Q&A session, local food and prizes to give away!

It’s going to be a good time, and we’re excited that so many people from the local Boston area have signed up to be a part of it. As of this morning, we have 62 registrants, and there will likely be some last minute registrations.

Here is the schedule for the day:

2:15 – 2:30: Sign-in and welcoming
2:30 – 3:00: CMS benefits for a university website and intranet: Reflections on our first year with Plone by Eliza Grinnell and Lesley Lam from Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. See a video of Eliza and Mike’s talk from last year’s World Plone Day 2009.
3:30 – 4:00: Theming websites effortlessly: How Deliverance saves us countless hours in the theming process by Aaron VanDerlip and Nate Aune from Jazkarta.
4:00 – 4:30: Catalyzing change through collaborative learning: Harnessing Plone as a platform for collaborative research and reflective learning at Columbia Law School, both within and beyond the classroom by Kyle Homstead from Chronicle Technologies.
4:30 – 5:00: Lightning talks and Q&A. This is an opportunity to give a short 5 min talk about how you are using Plone, or a cool tool that you’ve found and want to share. Please prepare your talk in advance, and sign up at the door. Projector will be provided. For example, there will be a lightning talk about the next major release of Plone 4 (see slides here), and there will be some time to ask questions to a panel of experts.
5:00 – 5:30: Drawing for prizes and socializing. Thanks to O’Reilly and Packt Publishing for donating the books!
5:30 – 7:30: Drinks and optional dinner at nearby watering hole

If there are no technical hiccups, we plan to stream the entire event on uStream.tv. The link to tune in is:

If you are hosting a World Plone Day event, you can opt to become a co-host, and then I can put the video stream of your event on that page, to create a montage of World Plone Day events happening all over the world.
